About this place
During lunchtime, Kawaji is widely appreciated for its bountiful set meals. The sashimi teishoku is a prime example: the main platter of fresh slices such as tuna and horse mackerel is accompanied by chawanmushi (savory steamed egg custard) served exclusively at lunch, 2 small side dishes, salad, pickles, and a bowl of clear fish bone broth or light soup, coming together as an exceptionally satisfying midday meal. For those craving fish steeped in savory sauce, the marinated yellowtail bowl (buri zuke-don) offers a quick and hearty alternative, while choices like grilled fish sets and pork ginger fry cater well to whatever appetite strikes on the day.
As evening arrives, Kawaji transitions into an izakaya centered on small plates and simmering hot pots. The kitchen turns out reliable companions for drinks, including sashimi like sea bream and amberjack, slowly braised pork cartilage, simmered flounder, and crisp, fragrant deep-fried glass shrimp kakiage. The evening menu further extends to eel prepared as glazed kabayaki or unglazed shirayaki, warming pots like local chicken nabe or sea bream chiri that can be ordered for a single diner, and whole softshell turtle courses prepared upon advance reservation. Paired with draft beer, Hakkaisan sake, or brown sugar shochu such as Lento, it sets the tone for an unhurried, relaxing night out.
Set down in a semi-basement space, the interior features counter seating suited for solo dining alongside comfortable table seating and raised tatami mats. Note that payment is cash-only, so it is best to have bills and coins ready before you drop by.
